How To Setup Scan to Network Folders on Sharp Copier – DIY

Here are some step-by-step instructions for setting up scanning to a shared network folder on a Sharp copier. You’ll need your Sharp printer’s IP address and a little bit of positive will power, but you can get it done. I have faith in you. Follow along with the video above; pause as needed.

    • Make sure the folder is shared. The Sharp copier will give you a “selected server not found” error if it cannot find the folder. There are 3 issues you should check in the following order, making sure to test the scans after completing each of the following steps.

      1. Make sure the folder is shared and the username you’re using for authentication has access to the folder
      2. Double check your folder path
      3. Check to see if any of your anti-virus programs are blocking the scans. A quick way to check this is to disable it temporarily and see if your scans come through – if they do, you’ll need to tinker with your settings to allow traffic from the IP address of your copier.

    • Yes you can, but since the computers will have different names you will have a different folder path for each one. Another way to do this, is to setup scanning to a server where the path would essentially be the same except for a user’s name at the end, like \\server\scans\Lorainne for instance. Then you can set up all of the people in your office, and just make a shortcut to those folders on their desktop. That way your scans are all in the same place, and the server likely gets backed up so that data wont get lost when one computer “dies.”

  1. Why are you using “Everyone” for permissions? That means even UN-authenticated users could potentially access the files.

Also, if the account used to connect to the computer is an Admin account (meaning highly privileged), why would “Everyone” be needed, because the account already has access to that location. I would think you could just give the folder the privileges of a regular user account, and use that same user account in the Sharp config. (You didn’t mention anything about multiple users.)

  2. p.s. – I meant to also add that, rather than “Everyone”, “Authenticated Users” is a better option if you must grant broad permissions. I would personally create a group, put a user or users into that, and give that group permissions to the folder, and I’d add a generic account (if I had multiple users) to the group and use that for the copier/printer/scanner.

When I looked at the Sharp config, it doesn’t seem to use ANY security to protect credentials, so that admin account’s password is flying around your networking in cleartext!!!

  3. Hi there… what is the username and password part? I see you used sbessharp\administrator and the password (which ours is admin). Do I put the domain name in or sharp\administrator and password in that part? Thanks…

    • If you have a domain it helps to put the domain in first: domain\username

If you dont have a domain just the username is fine. And in most cases, the username(without the domain in front) and password will work.

    • If you’re using a domain the setup would essentially be the same, but the sharing settings may need to be configured by your administrator.

  9. I’m not getting the row of tabs under the “register this address…” box, so I can’t switch between email and network folder. Is there another setting somewhere which needs to be set?

  10. I again ran across this posting while trying to help someone with a scan-to-disk issue on their MX-M753N. When in an Active Directory domain with a more modern OS and proper patching, the device is prevented from connecting to the server. It’s seems to be using an older SMB version, which Microsoft has essentially locked out for security reasons and the Sharp doesn’t appear to have any upgrades or work-arounds, other than trying to implement FTP somehow, which seems more complicated. Emailing large docs is not really practical with an out-sourced/cloud-based email service, especially given the insecurity of the emails being sent (unencrypted). This is pretty disappointing given that other vendors seem to be keeping up with updates like SMBv2 and SMBv3 without forcing customers to buy all new hardware.

  11. I keep getting an error that says the says Account name or authentication password is invalid. I know for a fact the password isn’t incorrect. I control the passwords in my office and no one is allowed in active directory to change them. So how do i troubleshoot this? Before all I had to do was remove them and readd but it’s not working this time.
